A Palace in the
Zephyr Breeze
Over an enormous mountain that
dominates the Pacific Ocean, covered
with tropical nature, the refined Hotel
Villa Caletas offered in November an extraordinary
show to present the Zephyr Palace, the most recent
realization by this prestigious hotel owner,
Denis Roy.
More than three years were
needed to erect this sumptuous 3,500
m2 mansion that takes guests to the
mystic world of the west wind god,
Zephyr.
According to Greek mythology,
Zephyr and his gentle and temperate blow
always opposed Borée and his northern
wind, cold and whimsical, Notos and his
southern wind that carries rain and storms,
and Euros with his eastern wind, hot and dry.
With a blow, Zephyr took the most
beautiful women to seduce them. He kidnapped
Psyche to offer her to Cupid, god of love, who was in
love with this gorgeous mortal.
Costa Rican artists, some of them part of “El
Circo Vivo” and others independent, presented a
show in total harmony with the palace magic during

sunset. With rhythms and chants that seemed to come
from the ocean, they danced suspended on the air, with
fire and even stars at the end of the show.
With bright eyes after so much magic and after
seeing the juggler and his crystal balls, the guests visited
the palace interior that overflows with a surprising
diversity of masterpieces. It was Denis Roy, with his great
artistic sensitivity, who selected all the pieces decorating
the palace. The guests started the visit in the
enormous horoscope room and its zodiac sign
frescoes painted in the ceiling, an exceptional
place to organize corporate events, incentives,
anniversaries or weddings.
On the lower floor, the guests discovered
the seven suites and luxury rooms, each with a
different decoration theme: the “Royal” suite,
the “Imperial” suite, “Nuevo Mundo”,
“Africa”, “Egypt”, “Oriental” and “The 20’s” rooms.
The bathrooms are decorated on each
room’s style. Every room has a large jacuzzi;
one has a sauna, and another one a gym.
From the “Imperial” suite, through a
secret corridor, it is possible to enter the art
gallery, another place totally created by Denis
Roy.
One floor down, there is a beautiful
swimming pool with Greek columns, and its
waters seem to fall on the ocean. Close to the
pool, the guests have a beautiful discotheque
available.
A few days after its opening, the palace
received its first guests. It is possible to reserve a hotel
room (between $800 and $1200 a
night), and for those who want to
take advantage of the palace’s
privacy, which has a different
access from the hotel, prices range
from $7,000 a night to $45,000 a
week.
More than ten employees
work at the Zephyr Palace to give
service to the guests.
They can also enjoy the
gastronomical food of French Chef
Vincent Boutinaud, who creatively
leads the Mirador Restaurant,
located on the top of the hill,
where the hotel rooms are hidden
in the middle of nature.
After 12 years of existence,
Villa Caletas has 100 employees,
who are at the disposal of its guests
in its 37 rooms, suites and villas.
Many Costa Ricans come to
the classical music concerts
organized each month in the
spectacular amphitheater that
protrudes from the ocean. Every
Saturday in August, the hotel offers
a concert in the framework of the
Credomatic International Music
Festival.
